WORLD SOIL DAY: SOIL, WHERE FOOD BEGINS
Since 2014, every year on 5th December, we celebrate World Soil Day. This is to emphasise the importance of soil in sustaining life on earth.

DRAIN OF NUTRIENTS FROM SOIL THREATENS FOOD SECURITY
Food security, a significant issue across the developing world, is taking a substantial hit from soil degradation. When the soil is stripped of its essential nutrients to support crops, our food becomes deficient in micronutrients.
This leads to what is termed 'hidden hunger',or micronutrient deficiency-related conditions.
Dwindling soil quality also means lesser yield and increased dependence on imports to feed people.

WHAT CAN WE DO?
Small changes in our lifestyle can help contribute to the well-being of our soil. Composting and recycling are excellent ways of replenishing the soil's lost nutrients and humus. Avoiding excessive use of detergents, which eventually are drained into the soil, is another step. The same goes for any other harsh chemical we use to clean our apparel or houses.
If you plant crops, practice mixed cropping and rotational cropping. The use of organic fertilisers like worm compost instead of Urea or CAN can help preserve the soil's natural pH and mineral balance.

Hello! Trekker Warrior brings you another opportunity to #DoYourBit by our Community Owner, Brijesh Prajapati, at Narmada canal, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, on 4th December 2022. Brijesh will be accompanied by three of our other COs from Ahmedabad: Khushbu, Jainam and Vishnu.
Trekker Warrior will help organise a cleaning drive during this visit.

About the drive:
Our COs will begin this drive at the canal point, where they have seen the waste. They will clean the area, collect all the waste, and arrange for responsible dumping.

Why should you join us at this location?
Narmada canal is a popular site that people visit very often. Our COs spotted a lot of plastic refuse at this location, so they planned this cleaning drive.

This initiative is a small effort by the Trekker Warrior community to spread awareness through a simple, symbolic yet effective act of picking up trash. We believe in leading by example, and by shared efforts, we can keep our water resources clean and preserve our environment and water resources.

In the last ten years, India has suffered 130 major industrial accidents, killing 259 people and leaving 563 injured.

38 YEARS SINCE THE BHOPAL GAS TRAGEDY - A GLIMPSE OF ITS SCALE
It has been exactly 38 years since the horrifying Union Carbide gas leak in Bhopal. To remind ourselves of the need to prevent such accidents, we observe National Pollution Prevention Day every year on 2nd December.
The Bhopal gas tragedy not only claimed several human lives but also killed about 2,000 animals. The leaked gas poisoned nearby water bodies and killed fish and other aquatic life.

HAVE WE LEARNT ANYTHING?
This disaster compelled the Government to introduce several reforms to curb environmental pollution.
Even with these steps, industrial disasters continue to wreak havoc on the environment. Several industries and factories continue dumping hazardous waste into the environment. Even our Community Owners frequently encounter water bodies contaminated by industrial effluents during their drives.
The ongoing buzz about air pollution in major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata further testifies to the pollution problem.

Hello! Trekker Warrior brings you another opportunity to #DoYourBit by our Local Chapter President, Appu C, at Cheppara, Thrissur, on 4th December 2022. Appu will be accompanied by two of our other COs from Kerala, Sakthi S and Arun. Trekker Warrior will help organise a cleaning drive during this trek.

About the drive: Cheppara Caves are located in the Thekkumpara panchayath of the Thrissur district of Kerala, 15 kilometres from Thrissur town, near Poomala dam. There are rocks which mark mausoleums, which are known as munimadas. On these hills, there are ancient-era dolmens (muniyaras), where sages are believed to have meditated. Fencing has been laid around these caves to preserve the historical treasures.

Why should you join us at this location? Cheppara Caves are a popular spot amongst tourists and history enthusiasts alike. However, it has fallen prey to littering and irresponsible tourism. Visitors often leave plastic wrappers, drinking water bottles, and similar trash behind.

The Yak has been an iconic symbol of Himalayan identity. Many of us have memories of clicking pictures with yaks at popular hill stations. But do you know their role in mountain life?

TRADITIONAL ROLE OF THE YAK
For centuries, people have revered the yak in Spiti, the high cold desert that borders Ladakh and Tibet. During the spring, around April-May, they help farmers to plough the land so it can be prepared to cultivate peas. The farmer sings traditional songs and hymns praising the yak during this exercise.
During the summer, yaks are generally left free and graze freely for a few months until winter, when the grass doesn't grow. Villagers get them back to their homes and feed them dry fodder, most of which comprises dried-up pea stalks after the harvest.
The female yak, locally called 'Churu', provides milk used to make butter, cheese and 'Chhurpa' - a dry hard cheese made out of buttermilk.
During festivities, some tribes use yaks for their meat. The harsh climate and unfavourable topography make food scarce in these remote areas.

HOW TOURISM HURTS THE YAK
The use of yaks for tourism purposes has led to their unfair exploitation. Often, they are forced to areas outside their natural habitat just so that they can be exhibited. In warmer climates, yaks develop infections and health conditions. Moreover, yaks used for tourism are often ill-fed and kept improperly, making matters worse..

On Sunday, 20th November, our Community Owners fro

On Sunday, 20th November, our Community Owners from the Bengaluru area, Tilak and Yoganandham, completed a cleaning drive at the Soma Sundara Palya Lake.
The five-member team interacted with the local residents, and collected about three bags of garbage. The trash was sent to a garbage treatment facility nearby.

“Mother Earth has given us such a beautiful nature, and We, the People, have ruined it. It’s time to act. It’s now or NO nature for the coming generations”, says Tilak, a Trekker Warrior Community Owner from the Bengaluru region.
Tilak and Yoganandham V, our COs from Bengaluru, conducted a cleaning drive at the Soma Sundara Palya Lake on 20th November 2022. This lake has suffered from nearby construction activities and the dumping of untreated domestic waste.

“As I am preparing for the civil service exam, I know how plastic affects natural and human resources”, says Yoganandham.
Our COs are hopeful about bringing change in the mindset of people through dedicated action.
“I, being a traveller, have explored many places around India. I’ve enjoyed my time but feel sad because people leave behind the waste they carry”, says Tilak. He continues, “Now [with Trekker Warrior], I have a base through which I can act with people who really care about Mother Earth.”
No matter how bleak the situation might appear, they keep their spirits high.
“Who can be disappointed after working for Mother Earth,” said Tilak after the drive, “It indeed brought up positive vibes in the morning”.
